This unique event is a first for Queensland and provides an online platform for export-ready, Queensland food and beverage suppliers to meet one-to-one, in virtual meeting rooms, with qualified buyers from the ASEAN region. Buyers represent major supermarket chains, convenience stores, e-commerce platforms, distributors, food service, importers, and more.
About the ASEAN Opportunity
There is a strong desire to increase ASEAN trade and investment from across the food, beverage, and agribusiness sector. The ASEAN market is on-track to become the fourth-largest economy in the world. More than 60 million households in ASEAN countries are part of the ‘emerging middle class’, with incomes exceeding the level at which they can begin to make significant discretionary purchases. That number could almost double to 125 million households by 2025, making the ASEAN region a pivotal consumer of the future.
Leaders of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), Australia and New Zealand recently announced the substantial conclusion of negotiations to update the ASEAN-Australia-New Zealand Free Trade Area (AANZFTA). The update of this agreement provide a great opportunity to increase trade with ASEAN countries. Provisions on electronic commerce, competition, customs procedures and trade facilitation, trade in goods, rules of origin, trade in services and investment will be updated. It is expected that the Second Protocol to Amend AANZFTA will be signed in 2023.
Southeast Asia is primed for growth, amid a flood of global downgrades, the Asian Development Bank’s September Outlook upgraded its forecast for the region’s GDP growth from 4.9% to 5.1%. Thailand, Singapore, Indonesia, the Philippines, Malaysia, and Vietnam to grow by 3.2% to 7.6% this year despite economic uncertainties and volatility.
Buyers from ASEAN countries are particularly interested in innovative and first-to-market health and wellness food and beverage products. More specifically, increase interested has been observed in the following product categories:
- Grocery, convenience and snack products
- Beverages
- Organic products
